Does VInegar Really Kills GERMS? discover the truth

I’ll be honest with you: when I first heard that washing machines need cleaning, I thought it was a joke. I mean, isn’t soap and water running through it constantly? But after noticing that funky smell coming from my supposedly “clean” laundry, I learned the hard way that washing machines can get pretty gross.

The good news? You can get your washing machine sparkling clean in just 30 minutes using stuff you probably already have at home. Let me walk you through exactly how I do it.

Why Your Washing Machine Needs Regular Cleaning

Think about what goes into your washing machine: dirt, sweat, detergent residue, fabric softener, and sometimes way worse things (looking at you, muddy soccer uniforms). Over time, all this gunk builds up in places you can’t see.

Here’s what happens when you skip washing machine maintenance:

  • Musty, sour smells that transfer to your clothes
  • Soap scum and mineral deposits that reduce cleaning effectiveness
  • Mold and mildew growth in hidden spots
  • Shorter machine lifespan and potential costly repairs

I used to think my detergent was the problem when my clothes started smelling weird. Turns out, my washing machine was the culprit all along.

The 30-Minute Deep Clean Process

Step 1: Clean the Detergent Dispensers (5 minutes)

Start by removing all the detergent dispensers and fabric softener trays. Most pop right out, but check your manual if you’re not sure how.

Rinse these under hot water and scrub away any buildup with your old toothbrush. I’m always amazed at how much gunk accumulates in these little compartments. For stubborn residue, let them soak in hot water while you move to the next step.

Step 2: Wipe Down the Drum and Door Seal (5 minutes)

Grab a damp microfiber cloth and wipe down the inside of the drum. Pay special attention to the rubber door seal on front-loading machines- this is where mold loves to hide.

I always check the bottom of the seal by gently pulling it back. You might find coins, hair ties, or even more unpleasant surprises lurking there. Clean everything you can reach with your cloth.

Step 3: Run the Vinegar Cycle (15 minutes)

This is where the magic happens. Pour 2 cups of white vinegar directly into the drum (not the detergent dispenser). Set your machine to the hottest, longest cycle available.

Let it run through the entire wash cycle. The vinegar breaks down soap scum, kills bacteria, and neutralizes odors. I usually use this time to clean the outside of the machine or tackle another quick cleaning task.

Step 4: Run the Baking Soda Cycle (5 minutes setup)

After the vinegar cycle finishes, sprinkle 1/2 cup of baking soda directly into the drum. Run another hot water cycle (this one can be shorter).

The baking soda acts as a gentle abrasive to scrub away remaining residue and further deodorizes your machine.

The biggest game-changer for me was leaving the door cracked open after each load. It seems so simple, but letting air circulate prevents that musty smell from developing in the first place.

Also, I’ve started using less detergent than the bottle recommends. Most of us use way too much, and the excess just builds up over time. Your clothes will actually get cleaner with the right amount.

When to Call in the Pros

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, washing machines need professional attention. If you’re still getting funky smells after multiple cleaning cycles, or if you notice your machine isn’t draining properly, it might be time for a deeper inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean my washing machine?

I recommend a deep clean once a month, with quick maintenance wipes weekly. If you do a lot of heavily soiled laundry or live in an area with hard water, you might need to clean it more frequently.

Can I use bleach instead of vinegar?

While bleach can disinfect, I prefer vinegar because it's gentler on your machine's components and better at breaking down mineral deposits. If you do use bleach, never mix it with other cleaners, and make sure to run an extra rinse cycle.

My front-loading machine still smells after cleaning. What's wrong?

Check the drain pump filter if your machine has one (it's usually behind a small panel at the bottom front). Hair, coins, and lint can accumulate there and cause odors. Also, make sure you're leaving the door open between loads.

Is it normal for the cleaning cycle to produce a lot of suds?

Some suds are normal as the vinegar lifts detergent residue, but excessive suds might indicate you've been using too much detergent. Run an extra rinse cycle if needed.

Can I clean my top-loading machine the same way?

Absolutely! The process is identical, just pour the vinegar and baking soda directly into the drum. Top-loaders are actually easier to clean since you can pause the cycle and let the vinegar solution soak for 30 minutes before continuing.

Will cleaning my washing machine make my clothes cleaner?

Yes! A clean machine works more efficiently and won't transfer odors or residue to your clothes. You'll notice fresher-smelling laundry and better cleaning performance overall.
