How to Get Rid of Bedbugs at Home

Love your furry friend but tired of the constant mess? I totally get it. After years of living with pets, I’ve learned that a little training goes a long way in keeping your home cleaner. The good news is that most pets actually want to please you – they just need clear guidance.

Let me share some practical training tips that have worked wonders in my home.

Pet Bathroom Training Basics

Even if your pet already knows where to go, you can make their habits even better. I always pick one spot outside for dogs to use the bathroom and take them there at the same times every day. For cats, keep their litter box clean and don’t move it around. Pets like doing the same thing every day, and this stops accidents.

Quick tip: Clean up accidents right away with special pet cleaners. This gets rid of smells that might make your pet go in the same wrong spot again. For tough carpet stains, try cleaning your carpet with baking soda – it’s safe and works great for pet messes.

Teaching Your Pet Good Paw and Grooming Habits

This changed everything for me. Train your dog to wait at the door after walks so you can clean their paws. Start by gently touching their feet when they’re calm, then use the towel. Give them treats when they let you do it.

For cats, brush them regularly to reduce hair around your home. Make it fun with gentle brushing and treats. Most cats actually like this once they get used to it.

Setting Up Pet Eating and Drinking Areas

Put food and water bowls on easy-to-wash mats in one area. Train your pet to eat only here by moving them back whenever they try to take food somewhere else. This keeps spills in one place and makes cleanup much easier.

I use raised food bowls for my dogs – they eat neater this way, and there’s less mess.

raining Pets to Use Their Own Sleeping Areas

Teaching your pet to stay off furniture isn’t mean – it’s smart. Give them comfortable pet beds in different rooms and always move them back when they jump on couches or beds. Give them treats when they choose their own beds.

If you do let them on furniture, at least train them to use special blankets or covers that you can easily wash.

Teaching Your Pet to Clean Up Their Toys

Yes, you can teach pets to clean up after themselves! Start small by teaching your dog to drop toys in a basket. Use treats and praise when they put toys away. It takes time, but many dogs actually like this “game.”

For cats, give them good scratching posts and use sprays on furniture you want to protect.

Reducing Pet Hair and Keeping Your Home Fresh

Brushing your pet regularly is your best tool here. Most pets need brushing 2-3 times per week, but when they’re losing lots of hair, brush them every day. This simple habit reduces the amount of fur around your home. Good vacuuming techniques also help remove pet hair from different floors.

Baths every 4-6 weeks also help, but don’t do it too much – too many baths can actually make pets lose more hair. Between baths, keeping a fresh-smelling home with pets takes some extra work – check out these tips for keeping your home smelling great even with furry friends around.

Keeping Pets Away While You Clean

Train your pet to stay out of your way while you’re cleaning. This stops them from walking through freshly mopped areas or knocking over cleaning supplies. Create a “stay” command where they go to their bed and stay there until you’re done.

Be Patient and Stay Consistent

Remember, training takes time. I’ve found that short, frequent training sessions work better than long ones. Always use treats and praise – yelling or punishment just creates stress and can actually make cleanliness problems worse.

The hard work you put into training now will save you many hours of cleaning later. Plus, a well-trained pet is usually a happier pet, and that makes everyone’s life better.
