5 Tips for Cleaning Your Mattress

How to Get Rid of Bedbugs at Home

When was the last time you cleaned your mattress? If you’re like most people, the answer is probably “never” or “I can’t remember.” I get it – mattresses seem like they should just stay clean on their own, right? Wrong.

Your mattress collects dead skin cells, sweat, dust mites, and all sorts of things you don’t want to think about. After learning this, I started cleaning mine regularly, and honestly, I sleep better knowing what I’m lying on is actually clean.

Here are my five best tips for getting your mattress truly clean.

1. Vacuum Your Mattress Thoroughly

Start by stripping all your bedding and taking it straight to the wash. Then grab your vacuum with the upholstery attachment. Go over the entire surface of your mattress, paying extra attention to seams and crevices where dust and dead skin build up.

I vacuum in slow, overlapping strokes to make sure I get everything. Don’t rush this step – it’s the foundation of a clean mattress.

Pro tip: Flip or rotate your mattress before vacuuming so you can clean both sides.

2. Treat Stains with Baking Soda Paste

Got stains? Mix baking soda with a little water to make a paste. Spread it on the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes. The baking soda pulls out moisture and odors naturally.

After waiting, gently scrub with a damp cloth in circular motions. Don’t soak your mattress – you want to use as little water as possible. Too much moisture can lead to mold growth, which is way worse than the original stain.

For tougher stains like blood or urine, add a tiny bit of dish soap to the paste. It works wonders.

3. Deodorize with Baking Soda

This is my favorite trick. After treating stains, sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the entire mattress. I mean the whole thing – don’t be shy with it.

Let it sit for at least 3-4 hours, but if you can leave it all day, even better. The baking soda absorbs odors and moisture you didn’t even know were there. Open your windows during this time for fresh air circulation.

When time’s up, vacuum up all the baking soda. Your mattress will smell fresh and clean.

4. Use Natural Disinfectant Spray

Mix equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Lightly mist your mattress and I mean lightly. You’re not trying to wet it, just dampen the surface.

Vinegar kills bacteria and dust mites naturally without harsh chemicals. Yes, it smells like vinegar at first, but that smell goes away as it dries. You can add a few drops of essential oil like lavender or tea tree oil if you want a pleasant scent.

Let your mattress air dry completely before putting sheets back on. Want more tips for a fresh bedroom? Learn how to make your home smell amazing naturally.

5. Protect Your Investment Going Forward

Once your mattress is clean, keep it that way with a waterproof mattress protector. This simple cover blocks spills, sweat, and dust mites from getting into your mattress.

Wash your protector and sheets every 1-2 weeks in hot water. This kills dust mites and keeps allergens under control. Also, try to clean your mattress deeply like this every 3-6 months.

How Often Should You Clean Your Mattress?

I aim for a deep clean every six months. But if you have allergies, pets that sleep on your bed, or kids who occasionally have accidents, do it more often – maybe every 3 months. Regular mattress cleaning is one of the best ways to reduce allergens in your bedroom and improve your sleep quality.

The effort is worth it. A clean mattress means better sleep, fewer allergies, and a healthier bedroom overall.
