How to Get Rid of Bedbugs at Home

Guests do not leave five star reviews because the location was great or the wifi was fast. They leave them because the place felt genuinely clean when they walked in.

Cleanliness is the one thing guests notice immediately and remember longest. One missed detail, a hair in the shower, a greasy stovetop, a stale smell, and it shows up in your rating before you even know about it.

This checklist covers every room, every turnover, every time.

Before You Start: Set Yourself Up for a Fast Turnover

The biggest mistake hosts make is starting without a system. Before touching anything, do these first:

  • Strip all beds and start linens in the wash immediately
  • Load the dishwasher and get it running
  • Open windows to air out the property
  • Walk through and collect any items guests left behind
  • Check for any visible damage and photograph it before cleaning

Getting laundry and dishes running first means they are done by the time you finish the rest of the property. That alone cuts your turnover time significantly.

Bedroom Cleaning Checklist

The bedroom sets the tone for the entire stay. Guests notice this room first and it needs to feel fresh every single time.

  • Strip and replace all bed linens, pillowcases, and duvet covers
  • Check mattress and pillows for stains before making the bed
  • Dust all surfaces including nightstands, lamps, and headboards
  • Wipe down light switches and doorknobs
  • Vacuum or mop the floor including under the bed
  • Empty the bin and replace the liner
  • Check that hangers are in the wardrobe and drawers are clear
  • Make sure curtains or blinds open and close properly

One thing most hosts miss: Guests pull back the duvet on the first night. If the fitted sheet looks tired or has visible creases from the previous stay, it registers immediately. Fresh, well-fitted linens matter more than almost anything else in this room.

Bathroom Cleaning Checklist

Guests judge cleanliness by the bathroom more than any other room. There is no margin for error here.

  • Scrub the toilet inside and out, including the base and behind it
  • Clean the sink and wipe the faucet and handles
  • Scrub the shower or tub and remove any soap scum or residue
  • Clean the mirror with a streak-free cloth
  • Wipe down all surfaces and tile grout
  • Mop the floor and get into the corners
  • Replace towels with fresh, folded sets
  • Restock toilet paper, hand soap, and any toiletries you provide
  • Empty the bin and replace the liner
  • Check the drain for hair and clear it

Do not skip: The showerhead, grout lines, and back of the toilet. These are exactly where guests look when they are checking how thorough you actually are.

Kitchen Cleaning Checklist

A dirty kitchen is one of the fastest ways to lose a five star review. Guests cook, they open every cabinet, and they notice everything.

  • Wash all dishes, pots, and utensils or run the dishwasher and empty it
  • Wipe down all countertops and the backsplash
  • Clean the stovetop, including the burner grates
  • Wipe inside and outside the microwave
  • Clean the inside of the oven if it was used
  • Wipe down the exterior of all appliances
  • Clean inside the refrigerator and remove any food left by guests
  • Empty all bins and replace liners
  • Wipe cabinet doors and drawer fronts
  • Sweep and mop the floor
  • Restock dish soap, sponge, and any kitchen essentials you provide

Living Room and Common Areas Checklist

  • Dust all surfaces, shelves, and decorative items
  • Wipe down the TV remote, light switches, and door handles
  • Fluff and straighten cushions and throws
  • Vacuum sofas and chairs
  • Vacuum or mop the floor
  • Check for any marks on walls
  • Empty bins and replace liners
  • Make sure all provided items like games, books, or guides are in place

Final Walkthrough Checklist

This step is what separates an average turnover from a five star one. Before you lock up, go through every room one more time with fresh eyes.

  • Stand in the doorway of each room and look at it the way a guest would
  • Check every light bulb and replace any that are out
  • Make sure all windows and doors open and lock properly
  • Confirm the wifi password is visible and correct
  • Check that all supplies are stocked and nothing is running low
  • Take photos of each room for your records
  • Do a final smell check in every room

That last point is worth taking seriously. A space can look clean and still carry an odor from cooking, pets, or poor ventilation. Open windows during cleaning and use a light, neutral air freshener if needed.

High Touch Surfaces to Never Skip

These areas carry the most bacteria and guests notice when they have not been cleaned:

  • TV remotes
  • Light switches throughout the property
  • Door handles and locks
  • Thermostat
  • Kitchen cabinet handles
  • Stair railings
  • Phone chargers or shared cables

Wipe all of these with a disinfectant cloth every single turnover without exception. Not sure about the difference between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting? This guide on what cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting actually mean is worth reading before your next turnover.
