Spring Cleaning Checklist: The Ultimate Guide to a Tidier Home

How to Get Rid of Bedbugs at Home

Spring cleaning feels like a fresh start. It’s that one time of year when I tackle all the stuff I’ve been ignoring for months. But without a plan, it’s easy to get lost. Here’s my complete checklist to make spring cleaning actually work.

Start with Decluttering First

Before you clean anything, get rid of the extra stuff. You can’t deep clean a messy space. Go room by room and sort things into three piles: keep, donate, and trash.

I start with closets because that’s where most clutter hides. Pull everything out. If you haven’t worn it in a year, it’s time to let it go. Same goes for kitchen gadgets you never use and toys the kids forgot about.

Decluttering makes the actual cleaning so much easier. Plus, your home feels bigger and lighter when you’re done. If you’re drowning in stuff and don’t know where to start, these simple tips to beat clutter really help.

Kitchen Deep Clean

The kitchen needs serious attention during spring cleaning. Start at the top and work your way down.

Clean inside your cabinets. Wipe down shelves and throw away expired food. Clean your oven, microwave, and behind the stove. Don’t forget the refrigerator. Take everything out, toss old food, and wipe down every shelf.

Wipe down your backsplash and clean under the sink. Mop the floors last so you catch all the dirt that fell during cleaning.

Bathroom Top to Bottom

Bathrooms get gross fast. Spring cleaning is when you tackle the stuff you usually skip.

Scrub tile grout with a brush and baking soda paste. Clean the exhaust fan (it gets dusty and stops working well). Wash your shower curtain or replace it if it’s looking rough.

Clean inside cabinets and drawers. Toss expired medicines and old makeup. Wipe down all surfaces, scrub the toilet inside and out, and mop the floor.

Living Room and Bedrooms

Dust everything. And I mean everything. Ceiling fans, light fixtures, picture frames, shelves, and furniture. Dust is the enemy and it builds up fast if you’re not careful. After spring cleaning, keep it away with these ways to prevent dust buildup.

Vacuum under furniture and cushions. You’ll be shocked what’s hiding under there. Flip your mattress and wash all bedding including pillows and comforters.

Clean windows inside and out. Wipe down baseboards. Vacuum or steam clean carpets and rugs.

Don’t Forget These Areas

Some spots get ignored all year. Spring cleaning is when you finally deal with them.

  • Light switches and door handles (they’re dirtier than you think)
  • Inside the washer and dryer
  • Air vents and filters
  • Behind and under appliances
  • Garage or storage areas
  • Outdoor spaces like patios and decks

These areas might seem small but they make a big difference in how clean your home feels.

My Week-by-Week Approach

Trying to do everything in one day is crazy. I break it down by week.

Week 1: Declutter every room
Week 2: Kitchen and dining area
Week 3: Bathrooms and laundry room
Week 4: Bedrooms and living spaces

This way, it doesn’t feel like too much. You’re making progress every week without burning out.

Quick Tips That Actually Help

Work from top to bottom in every room. This way, dirt falls down and you clean it up at the end. Open windows while you clean. Fresh air makes a huge difference and helps dry things faster.

Play music or a podcast. It makes cleaning feel less like work. Take breaks. You don’t need to be perfect. Just keep going.

Use a checklist and mark things off as you go. It feels good to see progress.

Spring cleaning is a lot. If you’re short on time or the job feels too big, there’s no shame in getting help. Sometimes calling in the pros is the smartest move.
