How To Clean Your Microfiber Cloths And Towels

Microfiber may seem like any other fabric, but things are different under a microscope. You’ll notice the difference between a regular rag and a microfiber cloth quickly; it’s enough to hold them on your hands and wipe any surface.

However, like any other cleaning tool, microfiber cloths need proper care to maintain them in top shape, including regular washing.

Learn how to clean your microfiber cloths and prepare them for any chore!

Step #1. Clean soiled cloths in the sink

Since cleaning rags can get pretty filthy, the first thing to do is separate the soiled cloths to remove excess dirt. Usually, you can wash them with your fingertips and tap water in the sink.

Note: if you are dealing with a germy cloth, consider washing it by hand in a bucket to avoid cross-contamination.

Step #2. Separate the loads

The washing machine is the best way to clean a batch of microfiber cloths. However, mixing microfiber with regular laundry isn’t a great idea mainly for these two reasons:

  • Microfiber is more delicate than other fabrics. The detergent you regularly use for your laundry could be too much for microfiber.
  • Your cloths work wonders for cleaning because their tiny fibers trap dust and debris. However, microfiber is also excellent at catching lint from your laundry.

Since microfiber can capture lint from cotton and other fabrics, you should separate your microfiber cloths from other cleaning rags. Once you have your cloths ready, toss them in the washing machine.

Step #3. Use as little detergent as possible

Harsh chemicals can damage the tiny fibers in your clothes, so avoiding detergent when washing them is better.

Plain water will do, but if you consider your cloths need soap, choose a fragrance-free laundry detergent without any additives and use less than a quarter of the detergent you normally use for a load that size.

Step #4. Wash them with cold water

Heat can also damage microfiber. Use cold water if your cloths don’t seem so dirty. However, if you consider you need a little more cleaning power, you can choose warm water—but never hot!

Step #5. Air-dry the cloths on a rack

Drying your cloths the right way is as important as washing them. One option is to hang them on a line outside, but the microfiber could catch dust and other particles. The best choice to dry microfiber cloths is to hang them on a rack indoors—don’t worry; microfiber dries quickly!

Are you in a hurry? You can tumble-dry your clothes, but choose the delicate drying cycle. Besides, avoid dryer sheets, as the softener can coat the fibers and ruin the cloths.
